Subject:

Status of MAS SSS data base and introduction of  "non standard" ACCEL measurements in the MAS data base

Background:

The SSS has a certain number of problems with flanges and service lines out of tolerances at CERN. Comparison with measurements at ACCEL is necessary to investigate if there is change of the mechanical structure or if the apparent changes are due to some artefact in the data measurement or interpretation. Measurements at ACCEL are not made in the same standard reference systems as measurement at CERN. In August 2005 the ACCEL measurements and interpretations were completed in such a way that a best possible (within available resources and taking into account contractual constraints) comparison between ACCEL and CERN measurements could be made. This was materialized in a template (excel). This template is used for uploads to the data base of ACCEL data. It closely resembles of the template used for uploads of CERN measurements but is not identical.

Following the crash study of the SSS geometrical problems, some issues are reported:

  1. some parameters were not included in the templates and should be added, since now they are considered important
  2. the ACCEL data measured before August 2005 and planned to be uploaded after the end of the production turn out to be useful now.

These measurements need to be certified (interpreted) in a best possible way for comparison with CERN measurements. A large part of measurements is concerned. In the last meeting for the SSS data base it was concluded that the ACCEL measurements should be extracted manually and put in an Excel spreadsheet. This was done (Zhengwei Gao, Karl) but other needs came up in the meantime.

Status of the MAS SSS database:

All available measurements at CERN are loaded, all ACCEL measurements made after August 2005 are loaded following their respective templates. Flange angles have been recently added to the data set to be uploaded (template extended).

Needs for completion of the data base with "non standard" ACCEL data:

The need to put data in the MAS data base for analysis in spite the difficulties to compare the new and the old way of measurements was expressed. It was expressed by Marta and Karl that the flange data was not needed to be in the data base due to the special treatment needed for this data. The final decision was, however, to put, in addition to the flange position, the raw data for the flange position  in the data base in case a detailed analysis were needed (the 4 measurement points used for calculation of the flange position). It was recommended to include in the data base a large set of data: experience shows that sooner or later they may be needed and that the main work is to open source files and fill or update the templates a posteriori is expensive.

Special comments:

Marta has seen that data is missing in the data base. This is most probably due to non existing measurements or a choice not to include them. For each magnet we have to check this and find out why this data was not put in the template for upload (Elena, Marta).

Work Plan and Planning:

  1. Status of the DB: Jerome/Elena will produce within days a table of the available parameters for each SSS to spot the possibly missing information
  2. The ACCEL and CERN templates will be revised to add the parameters that were found missing and useful for the understanding of the SSS issues (Marta and Patrick, within days)
  3. A special template for the dataset before the new measurement strategy (August 05) will be created (Marta, Jerome Beauquis). The base will be the existing ACCEL template, and this template will be extended (for example with the four measurement points for the flange position calculation). (Marta with the help of Jerome and Patrick Winkes, TS-SU). Planning to be defined

The data in the source files (on CD-ROM) will be extracted (Christine Hoa with the help of Marta) and put via a macro (to be written by Christine) in the template. This macro could probably be a modified copy of the macro that Patrick uses for the filling of the "August-05-template" (Patrick to be asked). Data validity and meaning will be checked by Marta and Karl. In this special template we would need flags for tracing of different things affecting the measurement or the analysis. These conditions are known by Karl and he will give us all the information to be able to classify the measurements in categories or to trace special conditions for certain parameters. In any case the whole set of these "non standard" measurements will be marked in the data base as a "special set".

We actively need the advice of  Karl and Patrick, who know well the measurements. Jerome should be informed concerning the template and the significance of the contents.

After a few days experience of Marta and Christine, we shall meet to evaluate the actual workload and provide more MAS/MA help if needed and possible.

The data set can reasonably be in the data base by 15/3 2006.
