Following the approval of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by
the CERN Council in December 1994, it was decided to launch
an intensive in-house program for the
fabrication and testing of short dipole models. Single and
twin aperture models are been fabricated to study
individual variants of the magnet design, the materials of
the components and the assembly conditions. Models are
made at a rate of one per month and often are re-worked
with modified parameters.
In addition to the activities on dipole prototypes, the
laboratory also participates to the R&D program for the
insertion quadrupoles MQM and MQY, manages the
inspections and test on polymide films for the LHC
magnets and the mechanical instrumentation based on
capacitive gauges, sets-up the diagnostic for the
localization of possible intern -turn short circuits in magnet
coils and is implementing a novel pulsed training facility.
